Self-Portraits Inspired by Yue Minjun

This week in Art, the 2/3s began working on self-portraits inspired by the Chinese contemporary artist Yue Minjun who is known for his giant smiling self-portraits. Students shared ideas about why Minjun might portray himself that way and how it might make the viewer feel. They said things like it might make people feel happy or silly. Rather than try to create a completely realistic portrait of themselves, the 2/3 artists studied some of Minjun’s work and noticed trends throughout such as his choice of colors, facial expressions and repeated imagery. As a group, we went step-by-step in creating our outlines, adding facial features with giant smiling faces like Minjun, and beginning to add paint. When we get back from break we will finish the portraits.

Happy Thanksgiving 🙂
